Modular Format

Each school leader must complete Modules 1, 2, 3 and 4. Each module consists of 3 hours of training presented by way of discussion of video scenarios predicated on actual cases.

Training Options

Training options include live sessions, online training, or a combination of live and online training.

Module 1 - Governance, Ethics, Current Issues in School Law

3-Hour module on topics including:

Sources of law
School governance at school, district, state and federal levels
Roles and responsibilities of school leaders
School Ethics Act
NJQSAC
School funding law
Major school law changes in state and federal statutes, regulations and case law

Module 2 - Student Rights & Responsibilities

3-Hour module on topics including:

Student Expression
Establishment of Religion
Religious Expression
Student searches
Drug & alcohol issues
Student due process rights
Suspensions & expulsions
Weapons in school

Module 3 - Staff Rights & Responsibilities

3-Hour module on topics including:

Acquisition of Tenure
Seniority Rights
Rights of Nontenured Staff
Increment Withholding
Tenure Rights
State Board of Examiners
Staff First Amendment Rights
Sexual Harassment
Collective Bargaining Rights

Module 4 - Special Education

3-Hour module on topics including:

Major revisions to IDEA and state code
Free appropriate public education
Discipline of classified students
IDEA & 504
Parental rights
Change of placement
Least restrictive environment
Dispute resolution process
